Full of Excuses

27 04 2009

Once again, I apologoze for my very lengthy absence from blogging. I’ve had a horrendous cold for the past few days, and before that, things with school kind of blew up and I haven’t felt much like blogging about it. Rest assured that I will be back online before long…as if you’re all holding your breath. :)

Teabagging Craze Sweeps the Nation…

15 04 2009

Today is Tax Day. Not a day that many Americans generally look forward to, but this year is different. All across the country, groups of conservatives, angered by what they suddenly see as “runaway federal spending” and by a fear of higher taxes, have come together to stage protests by dumping tea bags into our nation’s waterways. This is of course in honor of the 1773 Boston Tea Party, which was a protest against taxation without representation. We have representation now, so it seems to me that these protesters are simply going to ignorantly pollute today (very ignorantly because they seem to have misunderstood the meaning of the word “teabagging”). Besides the possible environmental impact of this ridiculous exercise, I would just like to address these so-called “concerns” that these people say that they have. Here are some of the myths being spread around by these ultra-conservative protesters (read: sore losers):

1. Federal spending during a recession is dangerous! This is false. Economists everywhere agree that it is the responsibility of the government to increase spending during hard economic times. This is the only way to unfreeze the credit markets and stimulate the economy. If we cut government spending right now, the recession would only deepen into a depression and our deficit would never shrink.

2. President Obama is going to raise our taxes! Oh no! Again, this is false. Obama is still planning to cut taxes for 95% of Americans and only raise taxes on the rich. I’m sorry, but they can freakin’ afford it! Also, their taxes are only going to be raised to levels that existed under President Clinton, during whose administration the rich were doing just fine. The average American is going to see a tax cut.

3. Obama is a socialist. Oh my god, are we still talking about this? You know, there is a huge difference between being liberal and being a socialist. This is simple fear mongering, and it’s honestly pathetic.

And here’s my biggest pet peeve about this: where were the protests from these people when President Bush spent his way through a multi-billion dollar surplus, turning it into a multi-trillion dollar deficit? Where were the protests when Bush started spending billions and billions of dollars each year on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (this is a very conservative estimate)? It seems to me that the conservatives of this country should just face the fact that they LOST the 2008 election. Enough sour grapes already! That’s what this is! They attack every single thing that President Obama says or does. You didn’t see masses of liberals coming out with some historically-ignorant protests during the Bush years. The fact is that the majority of Americans (about 70%) approve of the way Obama is handling the economy. These Glenn Beck/Sean Hannity fanatics are just going to have to get used to being in the minority for a while. So dump your damned tea and let us in the majority actually work to FIX the things that your party caused in the first place.

An Apology

My apologies for being so absent for the past few weeks. I’ve been going through some difficult and confusing times, but I promise to update everyone soon!
